Many different lubricants are available. <\/span>But what is the difference between fat and oil? <\/span>And what about lubrication? <\/span>Are these terms synonymous? <\/span>What is fat and what is oil? <\/span>What is a lubricant? <\/span>Is it better to use fat or oil? <\/span>WD-40 answers all these questions!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Grease, oil or lubricant: definitions<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Each of the different lubricants is used for the maintenance of moving parts. <\/span>But what is the real difference? <\/span>To better understand each of these terms, we’ll take a look at their makeup in a bit more detail.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Grease, oil, lubricant: different characteristics<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Fats and oils both belong to the category of lubricants. <\/span>They are therefore lubricants. <\/span><\/span>
\nThere are three different categories of lubricants, namely: solid lubricants, liquid lubricants and pasty lubricants.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Oils are liquid lubricants: they are characterized by their fatty and liquid state which does not mix with water. <\/span>The oils are mainly of animal, vegetable, mineral or synthetic origin. <\/span>In general, oils are called lubricants. <\/span><\/span>
\nGreases are pasty lubricants: they are characterized by their high viscosity compared to oil and their thick and greasy state.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Different lubricants: grease or oil?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

So there is an important difference between fat and oil: the level of viscosity. <\/span>But are there also differences in use? <\/span>When should you use grease instead of oil and vice versa? <\/span>Grease, due to its high viscosity, can withstand high loads and high temperatures compared to an oil that evaporates earlier. <\/span>It will therefore be used for large moving materials subjected to extreme conditions, such as high pressures and large temperature differences.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Oil, on the other hand, will instead protect materials from corrosion, aging, and lubricating mechanisms that are not subjected to high pressures or temperatures.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
